About the family
Brian and Heather met in 1989, became instant best friends, and began a life together. They bought their first home in Glendale, Arizona in 2002 and married just a year later. Their two children, Killian and Mary, came along over the span of the next three years, throw in three snakes, a pink tarantula, a bearded dragon, and a leopard gecko and the Szymura family was complete.
Heather’s career began in 1996 when she started working part time for UPS while simultaneously attending college full-time. Working her way through the ranks, Heather moved into management in the Business Development department. Instant success! It was here that she discovered her knack for team building and networking. She graduated with a degree in Global Business Marketing and within one year was promoted to full-time sales. By year three she had made it to Gold Start status, a real accomplishment within UPS.
After 15 years in the corporate business world Heather decided it was time for a shift. She resigned from her position at UPS and went back to school to pursue a degree in Naturopathic Medicine and delved more into her hobby of urban gardening. It was here that she found her life’s passion unearthing the amazing benefits growing herbs and food.
Brian’s career began the area of food management. He worked in leadership capacities for both Jamba Juice and Pei Wei restaurants before retiring in 2005 to dedicate himself fully to being a stay-at- home dad and he is the ULTIMATE stay-at- home dad. Brian is involved both inside the home and out and makes sure his two children maintain healthy, active lifestyles. Shortly after retiring Brian began having health issues later discovering that the source was a disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis, a combination of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and sacroilitis. Over the next several years he would endure 28 surgeries consisting of 6 surgeries on his foot, 6 surgeries on his shoulder, and over a dozen others spread across every joint except his elbows. He isn’t done but as his body continues to deteriorate he continues to fight the diseases effects by educating himself about the benefits of organic, healthy living and in 2013 Brian received results from an allergy test that forever changed his life… Cue urban farming!
B & H embarked on a journey into urban farming discovering that food can indeed be medicine. Brian lost over 150 pounds and was able to drastically reduce the vast amounts of chemically based pharmaceutical medications he was prescribed to take. He’s also slowed the hands of time sleeping better and moving easier without much outside assistance. His progress is an inspiration so for Brian and Heather, freight farming is life! They have passed these values on to their two young ones. Killian is a super active young man participating in both football and soccer and Mary is an artistic young lady who loves to dance and sing. Both kids help out in the family farm and love being a part of the daily business. As they continue along this journey, the Szymura family hopes to inspire others with their story and spread word about the benefits of growing your own food.
